image6 Simple Ways to Raise Environmentally Aware Kids

Children are the future and the key to our planet’s survival. Everyone can play their part to help mother earth, even the youngest member of your family!
It is never too early to start teaching your kids how to be environmentally friendly.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows us that in 2009, 98% of Australian households recycled waste and 86% reported that they reused waste. This means that a lot of families are actively participating in helping the environment and it is important that children understand why that is.
Teaching your kids about environmentally friendly activities doesn’t have to be difficult. Check out these easy and fun tips to getting your kids involved:
AROUND THE HOUSE
1. Preserving Water: Most kids will understand the idea that wasting something will often lead to there being none left at all. Teach your kids to always turn off the taps after using them and to make sure that water doesn’t run whilst brushing their teeth.
2. Saving energy: It’s as easy as flicking a switch. An empty room with a light on can be a huge waste of energy. Encourage your children to always turn off the lights after leaving a room. If you can, try making this into a game by asking them if they can ‘Find the Light’ by looking around the house and turning off any lights left on.
3. Recycling Routine: Most Australian families have a recycling system up and running, but do your kids know why they’re separating paper from plastics? It might be a good idea to research online and show your kids where garbage goes and how recycling works. This will give kids a better understanding of what happens to the things they throw away and the things they put in the recycling bin.
FAMILY ACTIVITIES
4. Worm Farming: Starting a family worm farm is a fun and exciting activity for kids. Worm farms require little upkeep and help to get rid of food scraps.
5. Plant a Tree: Trees help the environment by creating clean oxygen for us to breath. Show your child how to plant a tree with their own hands and then let them choose some flowers which are easy to plant at the base of the tree.
6. Organic Shopping: Next time you go grocery shopping, take your kids with you and let them pick out organic fruits and vegetables. Children should learn about natural foods, not just items that come in jars and packages. When you go out to the supermarket, bring with you some reusable canvas bags to save yourself from needing plastic bags.
Educating kids about the environment will not only teach your kids to be eco-friendly, it may also help save costs on your energy and power bill. Try these effective tips for raising environmentally aware kids and ensure that your family and this planet have a healthy future.

Greetings and welcome. The Theme of my Blog is about endeavouring to live an Ecological Lifestyle, based on Permaculture Principles. Some of the Topics we will explore in an entertaining manner all radiate out from 3 main slices of living ... Shelter (Yurts and Round Houses), Warmth and Food. A very special person once wrote "Learn From The Past, Think for Tomorrow ... Act Today". I have carried a little motto in my wallet for years ..."We are more of who we are because of the connections we have made". I look forward to our connections. ;-)
